Climate Action

The zero-carbon transformation has become a global consensus. Geely fully considers the global carbon peaking and carbon neutrality timelines, strategically planning in the areas of passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and shared mobility. The company actively explores diverse new energy technologies, including pure electric, hybrid, green methanol, and battery swapping.

Climate Strategy

Embarking on a carbon neutral path, Geely Holding aims to build a low-carbon value chain, and strives to become China’s leading carbon-neutral company. To this end, we have developed a carbon neutrality strategy that features “one overarching goal, two energy drivers, three carbon neutral scenarios, and four paths to zero carbon” as a guideline for the Group and its subsidiaries as we transition to carbon neutrality.

One overarching goal

Entire-chain carbon neutrality by 2045.

Two energy drivers

Green electricity

We support our subsidiaries to establish more photovoltaic projects, enhance the installed capacity of photovoltaic, and promote hydropower as clean energy in manufacturing bases to win a competitive edge in green and low-carbon manufacturing.

Green methanol

Geely Holding has been delving into the methanol technology and overcoming bottlenecks to ensure energy security and low-carbon development since 2005. We align the entire green methanol industry chain, including carbon dioxide capture, methanol preparation, transportation, filling, and methanol vehicles, and work with upstream and downstream suppliers to build a methanol circular ecosystem that includes methanol production and transportation, methanol filling stations, methanol vehicles, and methanol capture, taking a leap forward from small-scale pilot to large-scale operation and application.

Methanol torch design and fuel supply

At the opening ceremony, the Games’ main torch was ignited by carbon neutral methanol fuel produced by Anyang Methanol Factory invested by Geely. Based on the Group’s technical experience in methanol engines, the torch maintains combustion capability, ensuring a stable and enduring flame in extreme weather conditions.

Clean transportation of methanol

Farizon Xinghan methanol heavy-duty trucks were designated to transport methanol from Anyang, Henan to Hangzhou for the 19th Asian Games. Powered by green methanol, Farizon Xinghan achieved a closed-loop system that encompasses methanol production, transportation, and vehicle application, reducing fuel consumption.

Carbon neutral methanol certification

On September 4, 2023, China Environmental United Certification Center (CEC) conducted a third-party carbon neutrality certification for 300 tons of methanol fuel used during the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou, covering raw material procurement, transportation, and energy consumption during the production.

Three carbon-neutral scenarios

Carbon-neutral vehicle models

Geely Holding focuses on the electrification and intelligentization of the automotive industry. We coordinate efforts in leading technological revolution of Chinese auto brands by exploring diverse new-energy technical paths which include pure electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, green methanol, and battery-swapping technologies.

Farizon Xinghan H

Farizon XingHan H supports multiple power modes including alcohol-hydrogen electric mode, alcohol-hydrogen AMT and pure electric charging. Energy-efficient powertrain combinations can be fitted to achieve long range in accordance with specific scenarios. Farizon Xinghan H BEV model saves more than 45% energy compared to gasoline-powered cars; the alcohol-hydrogen AMT model saves over 25%; and the alcohol-hydrogen electric model saves over 35%.

Geely Galaxy L7

Geely Galaxy L7 is equipped with the new NordThor Hybrid engine, which promises a thermal efficiency of as high as 44.26%, and supports pure EV, extended-range EV, and plug-in hybrid EV setups, achieving ultra-low energy consumption. It boasts the predictive performance management system for intelligent control based on owners’ preference and mobility, seeing energy efficiency boost by up to 15%, with carbon footprint at 194.92 gCO2e/km, which is lower than the industry average of 16.2%.

Geely Galaxy L7, with its low-carbon performance, was awarded the 2023 China Best Low Carbon Model Award at the 2023 Annual Achievement Sharing Conference of Energy Saving and Green Development, ranking first in A-class plug-in hybrid passenger cars.

Lotus Eletre

On October 19, 2023, Eletre won the Low Carbon Car Model at Gasgoo Awards Ceremony by Gasgoo.

Carbon-neutral mobility service

Geely Holding’s two major travel brands, Cao Cao Mobility and LEVC Limao Mobility, adhere to the concept of green and low-carbon development. During the reporting period, Cao Cao launched the Caocao 60 pure electric sedan with swappable batteries and fast DC charging. Equipped with Geely’s intelligent drive-through battery swapping technology, battery change takes only 60 seconds, further boosting energy efficiency. LEVC Limao Mobility is actively exploring zero-carbon travel. The TX5 model, a dedicated vehicle for travel services, uses pure electric and range-extended new energy. It offers flexible energy replenishment methods and a longer driving range, helping to reduce carbon emissions in cities.

Carbon-neutral logistics

Specialized in the R&D and application of new energy commercial vehicles, Farizon Auto maintains parallel technical paths, and has created several service platforms such as Green Intelligent Link, Oneworld Technology and Soland Technology. These platforms leverage AI to match people, vehicles, goods, stations, and electricity in all scenarios, leading to reduced costs and increased efficiency within the logistics industry. This, in turn, contributes to whole-chain carbon-neutral logistics.

Zero-carbon-ready

Geely Holding first puts forward the concept of “zero-carbon-ready”, and promises to achieve the goal by 2040. Zero-carbon-ready refers to having the conditions necessary for achieving zero emissions, even if it hasn’t been fully realized yet. We seek a cleaner energy mix at the operational level, starting from plant, operating vehicles, and buildings, to reduce excessive reliance on coal and oil, explore and switch to alternative energy sources, including wind, hydropower, photoelectricity, hydrogen, biomass, and methanol. We continuously explore net-zero alternatives, transition to net-zero electricity during operation, and decarbonize in methanol preparation and application technology, laying foundations for net zero in the future.

Metrics and Targets

Geely Holding aims to achieve entire-chain carbon neutrality by 2045. We encourage our subsidiaries to establish carbon neutrality goals and indicators to support the Group’s overall goal from management, system, actions and performance. Additionally, we drive decarbonization across the value chain to transform to low-carbon and sustainable industrial development.
