Despite a pandemic hitting the world earlier in the year, a lot has happened in Geely Group in 2020. We have released cars and vehicle architectures, created strong alliances with powerful partners and won trophies and accolades to name but a few of our achievements.
Perhaps most importantly, we were able to help each other in our times of need with shipments of protective equipment being sent first to China and then to Europe and Southeast Asia. Through all of this, as a Group, we feel stronger and closer than ever to our partners around the world. 2020 has been a testament to all those involved as to what we can achieve, even during difficult times.
Here are our highlights for 2020.
Extending a Helping Hand
Earlier this year, with the outbreak of an epidemic, members of the Geely family around the world were in need of help – first in China, and later in Europe and Southeast Asia. The sending of protective equipment to different places around the world has been instrumental in the Group’s fighting of the virus and has brought the members of the Geely family closer together.
The First Step Towards Space
In April Geely Technology Group subsidiary, Geespace, began expanding its team with the recruitment of senior aerospace engineers in preparation for the development and launching of its low orbit satellites as part of its “mobility ecosystem” plan. The satellites are planned to launch in early 2021.
10 Years: Volvo and Geely’s Success Story
Geely’s acquisition of Volvo 10 years ago seemed to some to be an unlikely coupling but turned out to be a match made in heaven. At the 10 year anniversary in March, we took a look a back at how Geely proved naysayers wrong and ‘freed the tiger’.
Partnership with Waymo
Volvo Car Group announced the establishing of a strategic partnership with Waymo, a world leader in fully self-driving technology development, with the intention of integrating the company’s full self-driving tech into an new platform for ride-hailing services.
Reveal of the Proton X50
Following the success of the X70 in the Malaysian Market PROTON revealed and announced the start of production of the X50, a compact crossover-SUV based on Geely Auto’s Binyue. The X50 would become highly anticipated and receive massive pre-orders.
A Busy Beijing Auto Show
Geely Group were very busy at the 2020 Beijing Auto Show in September, with announcements beginning in the days before the exhibition began. News included the reveal of the Lynk & Co ZERO concept, the production version of Geely Auto’s new flagship, the Preface, and an all new vehicle architecture, the Sustainable Experience Architecture.
The reveal of Lynk & Co’s ZERO, based on the Group’s new SEA architecture, drew a lot of attention.
A Car Fit For the World Stage
After the reveal of the production car earlier in the month, the Geely Preface was announced as official vehicle of the 2022 Asia Games with Geely Auto appointed first chair of the Asian Games Sponsors Club.
Lynk & Co Unveil ‘Body-in-White” ZERO Concept
Lynk & Co’s ZERO concept production body-in-white rolls off the assembly line just 4 weeks after the concept was unveiled ahead of the Beijing Auto Show.
Cyan Racing Get the Double
After an incredible season, our partners at Cyan Racing and Yann Ehrlacher were crowned World Champions of the 2020 World Touring Car Cup. An amazing achievement and a testament to Geely’s passion for motorsports.
Daimler and Geely powertrain cooperation
The parent companies of Volvo Cars and Mercedes-Benz AG launched plans to collaborate on developing highly efficient powertrain systems for next-generation hybrid vehicle applications.
What happened in 2020?
