Mr. Li Shufu is the founder and Chairman of Zhejiang Geely Holding Group (Geely). He founded the Geely in 1986. Geely first entered into the automotive industry in 1997. Over the past three decades Geely has remained devoted to developing China’s automotive sector and has adhered to the pillar principles of technological innovation and nurturing talent.
Mr. Li aspires to build Geely into a global company that has an inclusive and diversified corporate culture and fulfills its corporate social responsibility. Under his excellent leadership and forward-looking vision, Geely has maintained robust growth momentum during the past 32 years and has ranked among Fortune 500 companies for seven consecutive years. Current, Geely’s business covers the entire automotive industrial chain with over 120,000 employees around the world. The Group has become a global enterprise with Chinese roots.
Upholding Geely’s philosophy of global operation coupled with high inclusiveness and coordinated development, Mr. Li has led the Group to complete several strategic international acquisitions including the acquisition and revival of Volvo Cars, the acquisition of the London Taxi Company (now LEVC), and other companies.
In 2017, the Geely Group acquired a 49.9% stake in Proton and a 51% stake in the Lotus sports car to further enhance its global competitiveness and internal synergies. It has also become the largest shareholder of the AB Volvo and the largest shareholder in Daimler, further expanding Group’s global layout.
Focusing on the future, Li Shufu established the forward-looking Geely Technology Group to explore and incubate innovative enterprises involved in the areas of autonomous driving, smart connectivity, and energy diversification. Geely Technology Group is working towards the development of a future smart three-dimensional travel ecology and gradually transforming Geely Holding Group from a traditional automaker to a global mobility technology enterprise.
Mr. Li has always been committed to technological innovation, the nurturing of talent, and promoting education. Under his leadership, Geely Group founded Beijing Geely College, the largest private college in China, in 2000 followed by Sanya University, Hunan Geely Automobile Vocational and Technical College, and Zhejiang Automotive Engineering College to prepare young talents for the society. Over 150,000 students have graduated from Geely educational instutitions.
Mr. Li has been elected as a representative in the 13th National People’s Congress in 2018 and the vice chairmanship of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce. He was also elected as a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference three times.
In addition, he has been given the title of “Reform Pioneer” by the State Council, ranked among one of the “100 Outstanding Private Entrepreneur of 40 Years of Reform and Opening up,” named the most influential business leader in China, one of China’s “Top 10 Private Entrepreneurs,” an outstanding figure of China’s automotive industry, and one of the “Top 10 Philanthropists of China” among other recognitions. In 2011, the royal family of Belgium gave its highest honor, the Order of Leopold II, to Mr. Li in recognition of his contribution to the global automotive industry.
